Sainte Chapelle de Vic-le-Comte

1889-1891 - Arbre de Jessé, Sainte Chapelle - Vic-le-Comte (63)

Construite au XVIème siècle, la Ste Chapelle comportait, dès l’origine, 3 vitraux dans le chœur. La verrière centrale «l’Arbre de Jessé» symbolisant le passage de l’ancien au nouveau testament était encadrée de «l’ancien testament» à gauche et du «nouveau testament» à droite. Ce vitrail central fut détruit par la tempête en 1793.  Félix Gaudin, Maître verrier, chargé de la restitution, demanda à E.Grasset de fournir le carton. L’obligation leur fut faite de respecter «l’esprit du XVIème siècle» afin d’assurer la cohérence entre les 3 vitraux.  [note 1]

  Built in the XVIth century, the St Chapel comprised, from the outset, 3 stained-glass leaded windows in the choir. The central canopy «l’Arbre de Jessé» symbolising the change from the old to the new testament, had on its left the «old testament» and on its right, the «new testament». This canopy was destroyed by the tempest in 1793. Felix Gaudin, master-artist in stained-glass, being in charge of its restitution, asked E.Grasset to provide the design. They were bound to respect the «spirit of the XVIth century», in order to assure the coherence between the 3 of them.. [note 1]
